The Biggest Windmill by David Rovics

Click here to enjoy the song on Youtube:
It was in the 1970s, the fuel crisis had begun The choices were presented to us as if we had none Leaders of industry said they could solve the problem By mastering the power of the radioactive atom Some folks in western Jutland got a notion in their heads They thought there might be something they could offer up instead A few hundred people gathered in a little place called Tvind And declared their will to harness the power of the wind   They said we're gonna build the biggest windmill...

Harold Pinter - Against the War

This is a speech by Harold Pinter that he made in 2005, regarding the bombings by NATO of Serbia in 1999. This is an example of a vastly superior power (in this case NATO) abusing this power outside international law and United Nations. These bombings were presented by US and UK leaders at the time as “a defense of civilization” and as being “morally imperative” – but in fact, according to Harold Pinter and many others, this was a bandit action and a war crime. The legendary folk singer and activist Pete Seeger died Monday at the age of 94. We air highlights of two appearances by Seeger on Democracy Now!, including one of his last television interviews recorded just four months ago. Interspersed in the interviews, Seeger sings some of his classic songs, "We Shall Overcome," "If I Had a Hammer" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone." He also talks about what has been described as his “defiant optimism.” "Realize that little things lead...

What if we change - Hope in a Changing Climate by John D. Liu

A major project is restoring fertility and hope to China's Loess Plateau, until recently one of the poorest regions of the country. Centuries of continuous agriculture have removed the trees and leaving land vulnerable to erosion from wind and rain. An area the size of Belgium, its once fertile soils have been washed away, leaving a blighted land scarred with deep ravines - and farmers scarcely able to make a living. According to soil scientist John D. Liu of the Environmental Education Media Project (EEMP), it's a story repeated all over the world. For 15 years John has been following a...

Introduction to Gaia

The Gaia theory (or hypothesis) is, basically, the idea of the Earth as a single entity that is self-regulated. This hypothesis forms part of “Earth System” science – a set of models in which life encourages and maintains suitable conditions for its ongoing existence. The originator of this school of thought is James Lovelock. He first developed his hypothesis in the 1960s while working with NASA and published an article in the science journal, Nature. At this time he expressed the idea in words such as: “Life, or the biosphere, regulates or maintains the climate and the atmospheric composition at...

The Problem is Civil Obedience, Speech by Arthur Zinn

1970 from the Zinn Reader, Seven Stories Press Parts of speech by Howard Zinn I start from the supposition that the world is topsy-turvy, that things are all wrong, that the wrong people are in jail and the wrong people are out of jail, that the wrong people are in power and the wrong people are out of power, that the wealth is distributed in this country and the world in such a way as not simply to require small reform but to require a drastic reallocation of wealth. I start from the supposition that we don't have to say...

'Not to share wealth with poor is to steal': Pope slams capitalism as 'new tyranny'

Published time: November 26, 2013 14:34 on Russia Today Pope Francis has taken aim at capitalism as "a new tyranny" and is urging world leaders to step up their efforts against poverty and inequality, saying "thou shall not kill" the economy. Francis calls on rich people to share their wealth. The existing financial system that fuels the unequal distribution of wealth and violence must be changed, the Pope warned. "How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points?" Pope...

A Poison Tree - a poem from “Songs of Innocence and of Experience” by William Blake

I was angry with my friend; I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow.  And I water'd it in fears, Night and morning with my tears: And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles.  And it grew both day and night. Till it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that it was mine.  And into my garden stole, When the night had veil'd the pole; In the morning glad I see; My foe outstretched beneath...

A poem by Pablo Neruda

I'm Explaining a Few Things. You are going to ask: and where are the lilacs? and the poppy-petalled metaphysics? and the rain repeatedly spattering its words and drilling them full of apertures and birds? I'll tell you all the news. I lived in a suburb, a suburb of Madrid, with bells, and clocks, and trees. >From there you could look out over Castille's dry face: a leather ocean. My house was called the house of flowers, because in every cranny geraniums burst: it was a good-looking house with its dogs and children. Remember, Raul? Eh, Rafel? Federico, do you remember...

The City that Ended Hunger

A city in Brazil recruited local farmers to help do something U.S. cities have yet to do: end hunger. By Frances Moore Lappé , posted Feb 13, 2009 in Yes!Magazine “To search for solutions to hunger means to act within the principle that the status of a citizen surpasses that of a mere consumer.” CITY OF BELO HORIZONTE, BRAZIL In writing Diet for a Small Planet, I learned one simple truth: Hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food but a scarcity of democracy. But that realization was only the beginning, for then I had to ask: What does...

Human rights destroyed by globalisation?

Example from India - one farmer every 30 minutes commits suicide.... During the 1990-s, the World Bank and IMF encouraged the Indian governements to adopt new economic policies such as "structural adjustment" and privatisation. Indias markets were opened to global trade and multinational corporations. The Indian government removed government support for farmers, and promoted heavily the change from subsistence farming to to cash crops, especially cotton. These changes made the Indian farmers very vulnerable - to international competition, to price falls...and without the safety net of government support. The rights of the farmers to a decent life, where they could...

Nordahl Grieg: Til Ungdommen

Til Ungdommen  by Nordahl Grieg   Norwegian: Til ungdommen[a] Kringsatt av fiender, gå inn i din tid! Krig er forakt for liv. Fred er...

Tvindkraft Windmill

Some history... The Tvind windmill, "Tvindkraft" was created during the years 1975-78, at the initiative of and financed by the teacher group of the schools at Tvind. The time was the time of the oil crisis, and the debate was for or against nuclear power - for or against wind power - nuclear power or wind power. The price of energy had multiplied, and something had to be done. The Danish industry was pressing on to introduce nuclear power as a cheap alternative to the expensive oil. A majority in the Danish Parliament was building up. At Tvind people were...

Yarrow: Light one candle

Light One Candle by Peter Jarrow   Light one candle for the Maccabee children With thanks that their light didn't die Light one candle for the pain they endured When their right to exist was denied Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice Justice and freedom demand But light one candle for the wisdom to know When the peacemaker's time is at hand [Chorus:] Don't let the light go out! It's lasted for so many years! Don't let the light go out! Let it shine through our love and our tears. Light one candle for the strength that we need...

Vian: Le Deserteur

Le Déserteur English translation copyright © 1983 James Prescott   Your Majesty the King, I'm writing you a letter, Though you might hear me better, if you could hear me sing. There just came through my door, my army papers warning, We leave on Monday morning, we march away to war. Well, I don't fit your plan, I must refuse the shilling, For I'm no longer willing, to kill my fellow man. Your Majesty, I say, with due consideration, It's my determination, I will desert today. I've seen my father die, I've seen my sisters grieving, My older brothers leaving,...
