My journey as a Development Instructor

My journey as a Development Instructor began with three months of training at CICD in the UK, where I learned about global development, cross-cultural communication, and practical skills to support community-driven initiatives. That period prepared me mentally and emotionally for the six months I would spend in Malawi.

Once on the ground, I worked within the education and community development sector, supporting local teachers, facilitating student programs, and engaging directly with families and leaders for community empowerment / development initiatives. Every day presented new challenges, limited resources, language barriers, and unfamiliar systems—but those same challenges made the work deeply meaningful. Progress was never instant, but it was tangible.

One of the most powerful lessons I learned was that true development is about partnership. It’s about standing alongside people, making it happen together. I saw first-hand how access to education can create ripples of change throughout entire communities. I also witnessed the strength, resilience, and hope of the people of Malawi—qualities that taught me far more than I could ever give in return.

Living and working in a rural setting, adapting to a new culture, and pushing through discomfort gave me a broader understanding of global inequality—but also of hope, solidarity, and the impact of grassroots action. I left Malawi with lasting friendships, powerful stories, and a renewed commitment to working in ways that are ethical, inclusive, and sustainable.

This experience helped shape who I am today—personally and professionally. It’s something I carry with me every day, and always will.
